We understand that some customers may prefer to maintain their knives. Sharpening your knife does not automatically void the warranty. The warranty will remain in effect so long as the blade is not improperly sharpened and the handle is not damaged or stripped due to disassembly, determined at our discretion. If you void your warranty, parts, and services may still be available for purchase based on availability.
Do not sharpen the knife if you are not confident in sharpening or if you feel the warranty could be compromised.
At Microtech, we use the best high-end stainless steels we can source. As a result, your knife has a very resilient and tough blade that can be hard to sharpen without experience with similar steels. Because of this, you cannot use any standard sharpener. We advise that you are very selective with the professional sharpener you use, as they may sharpen off a large amount of material which can damage the blade beyond repair, which is not covered under warranty. This info is not meant to scare you about damaging the blade, we just advise caution!
If you wish to do it on your own, two good sharpening systems are the Lansky and Wicked Edge. The Lansky is less expensive and possibly easier to use. The Wicked Edge is probably a better system but is quite expensive. Both systems allow for the sharpening angle to be fixed to a specific angle for repeatability (we recommend 20-25 degrees). Both systems allow for different grit stones to be used depending on what shape the knife is in. Follow the instructions with each system and you should be fine, as long as you have experience working with this type of metal.

It is always recommended to send it back to us to hone it back to a razor-sharp edge or consult the many online forums that cater to knife enthusiasts to get an idea of the different methods they use to sharpen their Microtechs and other top tier knife steels. The service we provide in-house includes cleaning and oiling the interior and exterior of the knife, as well as sharpening the blade for $20. You are more than welcome to sharpen it yourself or by a professional – though we do not have sharpeners to recommend – and urge that you consider the precautions mentioned above.
Our service is very thorough and is recommended to be done every 1-2 years, as our techs go through the entire knife. It includes disassembling the knife, cleaning and oiling the internals, putting it back together, and cleaning up the outside as well. They finish by providing a fresh sharpening.
